"Our Space" is a six-story residential setting focusing on collective living and different apartment types.
A common rooftop room with a generous L-shaped terrace and a ground floor garden are connected through an open staircase that links all apartments together, breaking the boundaries between private and communal spaces, particularly during summer days. Bypassing the difficulties involving traditional flexibility of private spaces, we designed slightly smaller units that could extend temporarily to the common areas.
The exterior tells a story of time by using wood framing, cladding and windows, such as Berlin’s oldest buildings. This prevents from employing styrofoam and masonry, strengthening the building’s sustainable character. The cellar, enclosed staircase and columns were made of concrete and, just like the exterior wood was kept unsanded, the interior walls and ceilings also in concrete were left in their rough state, accentuating the tactile aspect of such materials.
